Inspection of the motion artifact removal method from the EEG by using accelerometer

Abstract

Artifact often mingles with the EEG (electroencephalogram). It makes difficult to make out the intrinsic signal. The aim of this study is removal of the motion artifact causing subjects constrained. First, head movements are measured by an accelerometer and EEG is decomposed by ICA (independent component analysis). Next, the correlation coefficient between ICs (independent components) and value of accelerometer is calculated, and ICs correlated closely with each value of three-axis acceleration and angular velocity remove. Number of removed ICs are changed automatically by the condition of artifact contamination. Last, the non-artifact EEG is reconstructed by the remainder ICs. The removal method used for 5 seconds EEG divided from 30 seconds. Subjects were imposed task that moving head with closed eyes to inspect alpha band. As a result, motion power decreased and alpha band increased relatively. So this method effects on reduction of artifact influence.
