Investigation of direct shear behavior on tire chips using X-ray CT

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to investigate the shear behavior of tire chips. First of all, direct shear test was conducted for the material of tire chips. Sand and two layers of sand and tire chips were also examined in order to compare with the behavior of tire chips. Using X-ray CT, three dimensional behavior in the materials could be investigated without any destructions. And here, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique was also used to visualize the deformation property from the CT images. Here, the distributions of the displacement vectors and shear strain were measured at each shear displacement level. Finally, the mechanical property of tire chips was verified based on all the results.
