Abstract

For the precision synthesis of carboxy-functional polymers, the cationic polymerization of a malonic ester-containing vinyl ether (VOEM) was examined with various Lewis acids in the presence of an added base. Living cationic polymerization was achieved using ZnCl 2, FeCl 3, and SnCl 4 in conjunction with a suitable added base, whereas TiCl 4 and Et 1.5AlCl 1.5 only led to oligomerization. Such significant differences in polymerization behavior resulted from the interactions of the diester groups with a particular Lewis acid.
