Long term error-free operation of a fully-engineered 128 channel optical FDM distribution system

Abstract

A fully-engineered 128 channel optical frequency-division-multipiexing distribution system was tested for over 80 days. 128 optical senders, a cold-start automatic multichannel frequency controller, a 144 × 144 waveguide-type star coupler and intra-office interfaces were installed in an NTT standard Hi-PAS cabinet. Error free operation at 622 Mbit/s was successfully achieved with a bit error rate of less than 2.2 × 10−16for an 85 day period.
