Abstract
The crystal growth of magnesium diiodide (MgI2) was analyzed. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction data were used for solving the crystal structure of the compound. MgI2 was found isostructural with CdI 2. The van der Waals interlayer gap between hexagonally close-packed I- ions was considered an important feature of magnesium diiodide. The structure of diiodide was also analyzed as the structure, built from layers of MgI6 octahedra. Each octahedron shared edges with six adjacent identical units within each MgI2 layer.
