Abstract
The thermal expansion of RMn2 (R=Y, Gd, Tb, Ho and Er) has been measured from 4.2 K up to room temperature. Distinct thermal expansion anomalies due to spontaneous volume magnetostriction, ωs, were found for YMn2, GdMn2 and TbMn2, which may be ascribed to the collapse of Mn moments. From susceptibility, neutron and NMR diffraction measurements, we have revealed that YMn2 is an antiferromagnet with μMn=2.7 μB and TN ≃ 100 K.
