Abstract

The volume magnetostriction of cluster glass alloys, such as Fe-Al, Au-Fe and (Gd-Y)Co2, was measured and analyzed on the basis of a phenomenological theory of magnetovolume effects, in ehich the volume change is given by the contribution of the band polarization and that of the volume dependence of the exchange interaction between magnetic moments. The analyses exhibit characteristics of the magnetic moments in these systems around the critical concentration, i.e. the instability of Fe moments in Fe-Al, the localized character of Fe moments in Au-Fe and the induced character of Co moment in (Gd-Y)Co2.
