### Abstract

The differential cross section and the analyzing powers, A_{y}, A_{yy}, A_{xx}, and A_{xz}, have been measured for polarized deuteron elastic scattering from ^{40}Ca at 270 MeV. An optical model analysis reproduces the data with only central, spin-orbit, and T_{R} tensor terms, and shows the importance of effects arising from the imaginary parts of the potential, in particular for A_{xx}. No evidence is seen for either a T_{P} or T_{L} tensor potential.
