Metallurgy of nitrogen absorption process in high Cr steels

Abstract

High chromium steels absorb a large amount of nitrogen at elevated temperatures in N2 gas atmosphere, although it takes a long time for full nitrogen absorption in bulky materials. In powder metallurgy, however, steels can absorb nitrogen completely in a very short time due to the short diffusion distance from surface to center of powder particles. It is convenient for discussing the equilibrium nitrogen absorption in high chromium steels. In this paper, the behavior of nitrogen absorption was investigated in relation to many factors; N2 gas pressure, temperature of treatment, Chromium content of steels and their crystal structure, and the chemical composition region which provides stable austenitic structure was proposed in Fe-Cr-N ternary alloy system.
