Abstract

Wireless backhaul has been received much attention as an enabler of future broadband mobile communication systems because it can reduce deployment cost of pico-cells, an essential part of high capacity system. A high performance network in terms of high throughput, low average delay and low packet loss rate, is highly appreciated to sustain the increasing proliferation in multimedia transmissions. In this paper, we propose a high performance wireless backhaul utilizing the high interefrence tolerance, a critical demand for wireless backhaul, MIMO based nodes. To do that, we adaopt the current MIMO standard IEEE 802.11n to design such MIMO based wireless backhaul. In addition and to justify our assumption, we investigate the effect of MIMO channels correlation, a major drawback in MIMO transmission, upon the system performance, and prove the robustness of the scheme under different MIMO channels correlation coeficcients. After proving the effectiveness of MIMO as a wireless interface for wireless backhaul, we investigate packet forwarding protocol suitable for this MIMO-backhaul. We prove that the Dual Channel DCH relaying protocol is suitable relaying protocol for MIMO transmisson. Based upon this, we propose the DCH-IPT protocol as a forwarding protocol suitable for MIMO based wireless backhaul. Furthermore, we prove the effectiveness of the MIMO-DCH-IPT based wireless backhaul over the MIMO-DCH-Conventional one in which packets are conventionally relayed. The proposed wireless backhaul (MIMO-DCH-IPT) will accelerate introduction of picocell based mobile communication systems.
