Abstract

Combustion tests on degraded fuel with a viscosity of 192 cSt at 50 degree C normally used in large-sized slow speed diesel engines were carried out in a small-sized high speed turbo-charged engine for fishing boat with a bore of 110 mm, a stroke of 125 mm, and maximum speed of 2500 rpm to investigate conditions for obtaining good combustion with adequate reliability and durability through the application of proper fuel injection system and appropriate temperatures of fuel and cooling water as major considerations. In the process of combustion studies on degraded fuels, the authors have developed the Multi-Evaluation System called 'MES' for short, and evaluated combustion behavior on the following seven aspects: fuel characteristics, combustion mode, engine vibration, noise, engine performance, thermal loading, and heat balance.
