The authors wish to thank Professor M. Wakatani for useful discussions, Dr. H. Zushi for supplying interferometric data and useful comments, and Mr. T. Koga for his technical help. They also wish to thank Dr. D.L. Hillis (Oak Ridge National Laboratory), who read the manuscript and corrected the English. This work was supported in part by a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (Special Project Research on Controlled Thermonuclear Fusion) from the Japanese Ministry of education, Science and Culture.

N2 - The technique of the Balmer alpha laser fluorescence spectroscopy was utilized to study the atomic hydrogen behaviour in plasmas in Heliotron-E. The results revealed that the hydrogen atoms in the plasmas were produced at the periphery of the plasma, penetrated as Franck-Condon neutrals and the plasma densities were supported by the ionization of these atoms.
