Abstract

The wake interference of two normal flat plates arranged side by side to a uniform flow at low Reynolds numbers below 100 is investigated with numerical calculations and water tank experiments. Flow visualization tests in a water tank show that when the slit width between the two plates is small, the gap flow passing through the slit is biassed either upward or downward in a stable way. A new method is used for obtaining the Navier-Stokes solutions of the flow around multiple bodies by the finite-difference method. The numerical results are in good agreement with the flow patterns visualized in water tank experiments.
