Numerical simulation of crack propagation in rock by clumped particle model

Abstract

In order to investigate a behavior of crack propagation in a rock material, a number of numerical modeling by DEM and fracture toughness testing were carried out. The paper firstly describes the numerical modeling using Particle Flow Code (PFC2D) of uniaxial compression test and Brazilian test so as to calibrate input parameters for Kimachi sandstone. And then fracture toughness testing using SCB (Semi-Circular Bending) specimen is conducted. As the results, a value of the fracture toughness was determined. In addition to that, progressive crack propagation during the testing is evaluated. This information is extremely useful when numerical modeling of the fracture toughness testing is carried out for further research.
