Numerical simulation of crystal growth in two transport fields using a coupled map lattice

Abstract

A new coupled map lattice model is proposed for crystal growth in two transport fields. Three types of numerical simulation are performed with the coupled map lattice, which are directional solidification, crystal growth from boundaries, and crystal growth from one crystal seed. Various patterns such as arrays of cells, cusps, and dendrites are reproduced in numerical simulations of directional solidification. Densely packed needle crystals are produced in the crystal growth from the boundaries. A new type of dendritic pattern with intermittent side branches is found in the crystal growth from one crystal seed.
