Numerical study on seismic response of quay wall reinforced with tire chips

Abstract

This paper focuses on the seismic response of quay wall reinforced with tire chips in the form of cushion and vertical drains towards quay wall's displacement and backfill subsidence through the numerical point of view. Finite element software PLAXIS 2D was used to simulate the performance of the quay wall under seismic motions recorded from the earthquake which occurred in 1995 at Kobe, Japan. Three different cases were considered. They are: The conventional quay wall, the quay wall reinforced with tire chips cushion and the quay wall reinforced with both tire chips cushion and tire chips vertical drains. In general, the presence of tire chip material improved the performance of the indicators observed and the case with both tire chips cushion and tire chips vertical drains yields the best results.
