On the formulation of a more general theory for the finite deformation of thin shells

Abstract

This paper describes the shell deformation process using the general convected coordinates and formulates a more general governing equation for shell deformation. The terms those are finally retained after an order analysis contain terms with curvature of the shell as well. The validity of the linear range of these equations is clarified through comparison of their simplified forms in some particular cases with existing formulations and numerical results are obtained.
