Oxidation behavior of Zr-Nb alloys at 973-1273 K in air

Abstract

• Weight gain due to oxidation increased with Nb content at T ≤ 1079 K (α+βZr region), whereas at higher temperatures, that was smallest for Zr-2.5Nb alloy. • Oxidation parabolic rate constant was almost same as other experiments, and activation energy was somewhat smaller at higher temperatures. • For Zr-xNb alloy with small x, oxide film consisted mainly of m- and t-ZrO2. But, for sample with higher x, m-ZrO2 and 6ZrO2-Nb2O5 were observed. • At 1273 K, double layered oxide formed on Zr-10Nb alloy. • Nb aggregated in grain at outer oxide layer, whereas at inner oxide layer and underlying metal, Nb precipitated in grain boundaries.
