The oxidation of the mesophase pitch was studied to reveal how the oxidation is controlled by the unique structure. The rate of oxygen up take and structural changes at the oxidation are principally concerned. The unique features of its stabilization are: 1) High reactivity for oxidation is due to its rich methyl and isolated aromatic C-H groups. 2) The oxidation introduced quinone type oxygen in addition to aldehyde, ether and carboxylic groups found in the regular mesophase pitch. 3) Although quinone is rapidly introduced, ether and phenolic groups appear necessary for the complete stabilization.
