Abstract

Chiral nematic liquid crystals (N*s) which have helical structures are induced by mixing nematic liquid crystals (Ns) with chiral dopants. On the other hand, blue phases (BPs) are types of liquid crystal phases that appear in a temperature range between N* phase and an isotropic liquid phase when the pitch of N* is less than 500 nm. In this study, we newly synthesized photoisomerizable chiral dopants which have the higher helical twisting power (HTP) and a larger change of the HTP by photoisomerization to photocontrol of phase behavior of blue phases.
