Polarization correlation coefficient for the 3He(d,p) 4He reaction

Abstract

A new approach to study the high momentum component of deuteron D-state wave function by measuring the polarization correlation coefficient, C// [= 1 + 1/4(Ayy + Axx) + 3/4(Cy,y + Cx,x)], for the 3He(d,p)4He reaction is proposed. The first measurement of C// has been carried out at Ed = 270 MeV by using a newly constructed spin-exchange-type polarized 3He target. The obtained value is 0.223 ± 0.044(statistical) ± 0.037(systematic). DWBA calculations are unable to reproduce the present results. Each component of C // is compared with data for the d+p backward scattering and the deuteron inclusive breakup. A similarity in polarization observables is found among these reactions.
