Abstract

<p>The trend of wind turbine industry is making a wind turbine larger and larger, because its electric capacity depends on swept area. Those huge wind turbines cause many problems as like increasing cost and weight. As one solution for these problems, multi-rotor system (MRS) has been proposed. MRS has many advantages such as weight decrease and cost performance increase. Therefore, we try to create a new wind turbine system called "multi wind lens turbines (MWLTs)" that combines MRS and diffuser augmented wind turbine (DAWT). In this research, we investigated the power output and drag characteristics of MWLTs by wind tunnel experiments. Arrangements of MWLTs are side-by-side (180°) of 2 DAWTs, side-by-side (180°) of 3 DAWTs and right-triangle (90°) of 3 DAWTs. As the result, the average power coefficient of MWLTs is increased by 4 to 14% while the average drag coefficient of MWLTs is increased by 1 to 7% compared with the average of stand-alone turbines. It is found that MWLTs has a great potential.</p>
