Abstract

Accidents of brittle fracture occurred at the Hanshin Earthquake are analyzed with the consideration of the effect of strain rate on fracture toughness. Fracture toughness at arbitrary strain rate is assessed by surveyed Charpy impact value and yield stress for failed elements from previous our papers. As a result, assessed strain at brittle fracture is in good agreement with investigated one assessed by measured hardness number for failed structural elements of lower flange with beam scallop of box column-to-H beam connections.
