Abstract
The preparation of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pitch from waste pipe through extraction and heat-treatment processes, was analyzed. Waste PVC was extracted with an organic solvent to obtain additive-free PVC. The extracted PVC maintains a polymerization extent of about 1000, measured by viscometric method. The structural characteristics of pitch were analyzed by using TOF-mass spectrometry, 1H-NMR and FT-IR. The results show that the extracted PVC was heat-treated to obtain isotropic pitch of free-chlorine as a precursor to prepare carbon materials such as general purpose carbon fibers and activated carbon fibers.
