Abstract

Quantal size effects play a central role in the transition taking place, in strongly rotating nuclei, from pair-correlated to normal phases. The two conceptually different methods to treat these effects, namely, the random phase approximation and the number projection method, are applied to realistic situations implying both normal and superdeformed nuclei. Both approaches are found to give similar results.
