Abstract
The reactivity of the PI fractions in the mesophase pitches for their Diels-Alder reactions are studied to find the conditions suitable for their largest solubilization. It is shown that the PI fraction in NMP (Naphthalene Derived Mesophase Pitch) was easier and more rapidly solubilized than that in PMP (Petroleum Derived Mesophase Pitch). Such a higher reactivity of the former fraction may reflect its dominant cata-condensed structure, which was built-in by the cationic polymerization of naphthalene with HF-BF3 at lower temperatures.
