Two research directions taken by this group to expand the range for magnetic refrigeration above 15 K are described. One direction has been to improve refrigerant characteristics above 20 K for the Carnot refrigerator and the other has been to study the Ericsson refrigerator. A new material, Dy3Al5O12, was used in place of Gd3Ga5O12 in a reciprocating Carnot refrigerator with a consequent increase in its refrigeration range. A method has also been developed for making the refrigerant suitable for the ideal Ericsson cycle including two kinds of isomagnetic field processes. Results are presented.
