Regioregular, head to tail coupled, amine functionalized polythiophenes

Regioregular, head to tail (HT) coupled poly-3-(substituted)thiophenes (PTs) were investigated. Polythiophenes with short (or no) substituents are insoluble. To circumvent this difficulty, a solubility conferring protecting group was installed on the amine. Monomer 4 was polymerized to yield a predominantly insoluble product. Monomer 6 was polymerized to yield a CHCl3 soluble material that is difficult to purify. Results showed that these materials provide convenient starting points for further modification and possess chemosensory properties.
