Abstract
Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayer films of ruthenium (II) - polypyridine complexes with nonlinear optical (NLO) property were prepared. The surface pressure - molecular area (π-A) isotherm showed a distinct phase transition for the complex with four n-hexadecyl tails, but not for the complex with two n-hexadecyl tails. Polarized optical second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements of the LB film indicated that the complex with four n-hexadecyl tails took a densely-packed monolayer structure with vertical orientation at a higher deposition pressure (typically at 45 mN/m), but the complex with two n-hexadecyl tails did not.
