Self-consistent analysis of ion tail formation due to neutral-beam injection and its effect on confinement requirement

Abstract

An analysis model for consistently evaluating the ion tail formation due to intense neutral-beam injection and its effect on the confinement requirement for D-T plasma is developed. The basic equations consist of a set of nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations for all the ion species present in the plasma and a global power-balance equation for electrons. From the equilibrium solutions to these equations, the confinement requirement is evaluated on the nτ-T plane. By comparing the result with those derived from a conventional power-balance calculation, the degree of decrement in confinement requirement due to tail formation is quantitatively evaluated. It is shown that the decrement in nτ value becomes significant at low operating temperature range.
