    Abstract

A water-soluble derivative of meso-hexaaryl doubly N-confused hexaphyrin 1 was synthesized by appending pyridinium groups to the meso-aryl moieties of the hexapyrrolic macrocycle. Hexaphyrin 1 and its bis-Zn(II) complex 1-Zn interacted with DNA in aqueous buffer solution, which were detectable by the absorption changes and by the turn-off fluorescence response.
