Status of super heavy element research using GARIS at RIKEN

Abstract

A gas filled recoil separator GARIS for heavy element research was installed at, an experimental hall of the RIKEN linear Accelerator (RILAC) facility. One of the interesting applications of the separator is the discovery of nuclei of superheavy elements whose atomic number are grater then 110. We performed experiments to study productions and decays of heavy nuclei, 271Ds and 272111, which were produced with 208Pb + 64Ni → 271Ds + n and 209Bi + 64Ni → 272111 + n reactions. Fourteen atoms of 271Ds and the same number of272111 were detected and identified. Existence of an isomeric state in 271Ds was confirmed. In the decay chains of 272111, spontaneous fission decays were observed in decay of 264Bh and 260Db.
