Abstract

The elastic breakup of 56 MeV deuterons has been studied in a kinematically complete measurement at θp = θn = 0°. The triple differential cross section exhibits a conspicuous double-peaked structure. Its magnitude reaches a maximum at around 40Ca as a function of target. These characteristic features are analyzed on the basis of the distorted-wave Born-approximation theory and turn out to be strong evidence for the Coulomb breakup of the deuteron.
