Surface and interfacial structure of crystalline silsesquioxane nanofiller/polymer hybrid thin films

Abstract

Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS), which is one of nanosized materials with a silica core and organic groups on the surface, meets increasing interest as building units for inorganic-organic hybrid materials. In this study, the molecular aggregation state of polystyrene (PS) based cyclopentyl-substituted POSS (CpPOSS) hybrid thin films are discussed. CpPOSS/PS hybrid thin films were prepared by spin-coating and annealed above the glass transition temperature. The structure of the hybrid films was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD) measurements. Structural analyses revealed that CpPOSS segregated on the film surface and crystallized. The segregation of CpPOSS to the film surface was enhanced through annealing processes. The enrichment layer of CpPOSS, which can change the morphology and enrgetics of the films, seems to contribute to the thermal stability of the films.
