Abstract
The possibility for atomically well-defined free surface of poled transparent insulating single crystals of a prototype ferroelectric system, BaTiO3, to conduct current in high vacuum was demonstrated. A surface electron layer was found. These results provide a theoretical basis for the wide applications of ultrasmall ferroelectrics.
