Ecosystem services Ecosystem and biodiversity Since the conclusion of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) (the socalled Earth Summit) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, biodiversity has been attracting global attention to the point where its loss has become one of the most important environmental issues in the world. Climate change has followed a similar pathway (see Figure 1.1) but these two issues have different characteristics.
