N2 - Objective: Suwaishou, a repetitive twisting movement of the trunk from side to side with relaxed upper limbs, is a basic Qigong physical exercise. This exercise is widely used for relaxation. However, it is not known if it has antinociceptive effect. The aim of this study was to assess if practicing suwaishou-like exercise increases pain threshold in beginners. Methods: Five healthy beginners practiced suwaishou-like exercise for 15 min. Mechanical pain threshold of the left shoulder was measured by an algometer before and after the exercise. Stiff sensation in the shoulders was assessed by visual analog scale (VAS). Profile of Mood States (POMS) was also assessed. Results: After the exercise, mechanical pain threshold in the left shoulder increased. Furthermore, VAS score of stiff sensation in the shoulders and POMS-F (fatigue) score decreased. Conclusions: Suwaishou-like exercise increases pain threshold and decreases fatigue and stiff sensation in the shoulders even in beginners.
