Abstract
Styrene derivatives p-substituted with adamantyl groups, 4-(1-adamantyl)styrene (1) and 4-(1-adamantyl)-α-methylstyrene (2), were polymerized with sec-butyllithium in THF at -78°C. The anionic polymerizations of 1 and 2 proceeded quantitatively to afford the polymers having the predicted Mns and the narrow MWDs. The resulting poly(1) and poly(2) had high Tgs of 232°C and 273°C compared with those of polystyrene (Tg = 100°C) and poly(α-methylstyrene) (Tg = 160°C).
