Abstract

The effect of an intermediate coating treatment on the superconducting properties of YBa2CU3O7-δ is reported. In this process, superconductor grains are coated with SnI4 by soaking the grains in SnI4 solution between sintering treatments. Critical transport current density, measured by a standard four-probe dc resistive method, is found to be significantly improved. This effect is prominent for high-temperature sintering near the melting point; textured crystal growth is seen and the critical transport current density reaches 14 000 A cm-2 at 77 K, 0 T.
