The effect of shear bands within backfill on the development of passive thrust against retaining walls

Abstract

A numerical analysis is performed in which the progressive failure characteristic of dry granular backfill behind a retaining wall is modeled by considering the bi-directional orientations of the localized shear bands. The failure patterns of the backfill, for two modes of movement of the wall, were observed. The failure pattern in each case was found to be different. The part of the backfill where predominant failure occurred was then replaced by lightweight Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) material, and numerical analysis was performed for the composite backfill condition. A significant reduction in earth pressure was found to occur by EPS backfilling. The results of the numerical analysis confirm many generally established trends and substantiate the need for a more rational approach in analysis and design of retaining structures.
