Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to make clear how Akita Mokko Co. Ltd. was founded in 1911,(in the 44th year of Meiji). As a result of doing research into documentary records, the following conclusions were drawn. 1) Research on bent wood furniture in Germany, Austria and Hungary was done according to the policy of the Agriculture and Commerce Ministry. On the basis of this report, there came into being the promotion of making use of the broad-leaved trees growing in Tohoku District in Japan. 2) Naosuke Iijima, a forestry officer in Akita Prefecture, published his idea serially in the newspaper that bent wood work would help to utilize broad-leaved trees. Under the influence of this article, Kumanosuke Kutsuzawa founded Akita Bent Wood Manufacturing Company, which later became Akita Mokko Co. Ltd. 3) Tokujiro Sato, who worked for Tokyo Bent Wood Factory after having learned bent wood work in Austria, participated in Akita Bent Wood Manufacturing Company as an expert and laid the groundwork for manufacturing technique in Akita Mokko Co. Ltd.
