Abstract
We analyze dispersion relations of surface wave modes of viscoelastic materials. There are three basic modes in the system without gravity: the Rayleigh elastic mode (ω ∼ k), the capillary mode (ω ∼ k3/2), and the overdamped liquid mode (ω ∼ -ik). However, for some values of shear modulus the system has the region of k where there is no surface mode which satisfies physical boundary conditions. This 'gap region' lies on the capillary-elastic mode boundary, and makes the behavior of the surface wave complicated in the vicinity of this boundary.
