Theoretical capacity evaluation of power controlled CDMA downlink with code limitation

Abstract

This paper presents a method for the theoretical evaluation of downlink (DL) capacity, taking into consideration both orthogonal code limitations and transmit power control. Capacity is defined as the number of given users per cell for which the outage probability will be at a given level. I have developed a distribution function for signal reception power from which outage probability can be calculated. Crucial to the method is the introduction of average power control level into the distribution function, making it unnecessary to consider individual transmit power level for multiple MSs located at a single service area. In order to be able to do this, I have developed an equation by which it is possible to determine average power control levels. Results achieved with the method agree well with those arrived at in multi-cell multi-user system simulations, and computation time was much shorter, which suggests great promise for this approach in the design of an efficient DLs.
