note = "Funding Information: The Therapeutic Guidelines for Atopic Dermatitis 1999 were first announced by the Research Group for Therapeutic Guideline Construction on Atopic Dermatitis (Director : Shoso Yamamoto), which was supported by the Japanese Ministry of Health , Labour and Welfare. These guidelines were further updated in 2001 and 2002. They target general physicians . The structure of these guidelines corresponds with that of the treatment guidelines proposed by the Japanese Dermatological Association, which are aimed at dermatologists ( http : web . kanazawa-u . ac . jp med24 atopy therapy.html). The classification of the potency of topical steroids was unified in both guidelines． Although analysis of the pathogenesis and related genes for atopic dermatitis ( AD ) is currently progressing, this work has not yet elucidated the fundamental cause of AD . AD is a common , chronic or chronically relapsing, severely pruritic, eczematous skin disease. Therefore, the patient{\textquoteright}s discomfort is largely similar to that in other intractable skin diseases. In order to achieve good communication with patients, it is important for physicians to carefully listen to how patients describe their discomfort, some- times over a period of many hours. It is also a prerequisite to help patients understand that the medication currently prescribed is a disease-adapted treatment, although very useful to control disease activity, and to understand that the majority of patients experience spontaneous regression during follow-up．",
