Thermal molecular motion of cyclic polystyrene thin films

Abstract

Well-defined cyclic polystyrenes (c-PS) with various molecular masses were prepared by the reaction of linear polystyrene (l-PS) with two end vinyl groups and potassium naphthalenide as a coupling agent. Then, mechanical relaxation behavior of l- and c-PS thin films was examined. The αa- relaxation process corresponding to the segmental motion was clearly observed for the both films. Assuming that Vogel-Fulcher law could be simply applied to the l- and c-PS thin films, glass transition temperatures of the films were estimated to be 375 K and 379 K, respectively. More conclusive work using thinner l- and c-PS films will be presented in the talk.
