Abstract

A thermotropic liquid crystal was constructed from the intermolecular hydrogen-bonds between a calix[4]arene derivative having four pyridyl groups (1) and four p-alkoxybenzoic acid derivatives having a long alkyl chain (2n) for the first time. The formation of molecular assembled mesogenes was confirmed by polarizing optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and X-ray diffraction (XRD).
