Abstract
A fast waveguide p-i-n photodiode (WGPD) and a traveling-wave electro-optic (EO) modulator are used to achieve an optical eye diagram measurement. The optical sampling head consists of a traveling-wave LiNbO3 intensity modulator, an optical-to-electrical conversion probe head with the WGPD, and a bias/termination probe head. Optical sampling pulses of 0.7-ps full width at half maximum (FWHM) are generated using a fiber laser at 40-MHz repetition rate. The bandwidth of the system is limited by the chip-to-chip interconnection using the probe heads since the 3-dB bandwidths of the WGPD and the LiNbO3 modulator are beyond 100 GHz.
