Undrained cyclic shear properties of tire chip-sand mixtures

Abstract

Recycling of scrap tires has been gaining attention recently because of its potential economic and environmental benefits. Recently, tire chips derived from old tires are mixed with sand to produce new geomaterials that can be used in engineering structures. In order to understand the undrained cyclic shear properties and strength characteristics of such soil mixtures, a series of undrained cyclic triaxial tests was conducted on specimens with varying mix ratios of tire chips and sand. Test results showed that since the tire chips in the soil mixture control the build-up of excess pore water pressure, the undrained cyclic shear behavior and cyclic strength are affected by the amount of sand comprising the mixture.
