Changes in the electronic structure of NO adsorbed on a clean Pt(001)-hex R0.7° surface at 80 K are investigated as a function of NO exposure and after ArF excimer laser (193 nm) irradiation by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. An adsorbed NO species active to laser-stimulated desorption appears at higher coverages, and is characterized by a band derived from the 2π orbital of NO at binding energies Eb = 1.6-2.7 eV below the Fermi level. In addition to the band, two peaks appear at Eb = 2.5 and 3.0 eV, which are attributed to NO adsorbed on the hex and 1 × 1 areas, respectively.
