Abstract
The effect of R2O or RO additives on the viscosities of CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 melts has been measured by rotating crucible viscometer. In addition, structural characterizations of these quenched vitreous samples have been investigated by 27Al and 29Si MAS-NMR spectra. The viscosities of CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 melts decreased with increasing the additive content of Li2O or Na2O. However, the viscosities of the melts increased with increasing the additive content of K2O, Rb2O or BaO. From the results of the 27Al and 29Si MAS-NMR spectra, the increase in viscosity of CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 ternary melts with addition of K2O, Rb2O or BaO are considered to be dependent on increase of polymerization degree of aluminosilicate anions in the melts.
